Description

Iimura found a parallel between the steam of Japanese hot springs and the vapor coming out of manholes in the streets of New York. The sequence of the juxtaposed closeups and long shots, 5 seconds each, shows steaming manholes at 10 different locations in the city. Premiered as a video performance/installation, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, in 1985.
